Grande Grèce thanks to a donation fromIn 1887, Paul Gauguin and Charles Laval spent four months on the island of Martinique, a stay that would prove decisive for their artistic development. The two friends dreamed of finding an idyllic environment in the Antilles. In their drawings and paintings, distinguished by their vibrant colors and bold compositions, they depicted Martinique as a pristine tropical paradise, without taking into account the harsh daily reality of the colonial world.
