As assistant to botanist Philibert Comemrson, she sailed in 1766 disguised as a man, since women were not allowed in the French Royal Navy. After a two year voyage she was discovered and forced to land on Mauritius Island alone and without resources. In 1774 she married the French naval officer Jean Dubernat and returned to France completing the round the world trip. In
