The diamond pattern, which we find in many European courts, was first seen in Siena during the dark ages at the mouth of Via Cassia and later, Via Fancigena. The name Pienza originates from the fact that this road (via) lead to the homonymous village. Some ancient records of the pattern can be admired in medieval art
