Portret van Rosa Spier Realisme Several major exhibitions of hisWillem Bastiaan Tholen was born in Amsterdam in 1860 as the son of the painter, and later art dealer, Pieter Hendrik Hermanus Tholen. Tholen was educated at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He was taught by Paul Joseph Constantin Gabril, among others, whose work had a great influence on his style. After his education, Tholen settled as a drawing teacher in Gouda and then in Kampen. Nature was a great source of inspiration for him.
